The Mentor Gap#
A mentor changes the shape of someone’s career. The right guidance at the right moment can be the difference between giving up and breaking through. Most people who reach senior positions in tech can point to someone who showed them the way. Most people who never get the chance simply never had that someone.
The Mentor Gap closes that distance, from both directions.
On one side, there are mentees without access to a human mentor: people in underserved regions, facing limited local opportunities, economic hardship, or conflict, who want to grow but have no one in their network to guide them. On the other side, there are people who want to mentor but don’t know how to start.
For mentees: free, self-serve guides that help you build your own AI mentor for job search support, study planning, and career growth when there is no human mentor within reach. The guides are built for real conditions, readable offline once downloaded, usable on a basic smartphone, and honest about what AI can and cannot do. They teach transferable skills, not shortcuts, and they will never pretend that an AI replaces a human mentor.
For new mentors: the Mentor Starter Kit gives people who want to mentor but don’t know where to start the structure, questions, and tools a first mentorship requires. Confidence and structure are skills like any other, and they can be taught.
The guide series is where The Mentor Gap is starting, not where it stops. As new ideas and resources emerge, the project will keep building on both sides of the gap, more guides, new formats, new tools, always free and always aimed at the same goal, closing the distance between people who need guidance and people ready to give it.
The Mentor Gap is an independent, noncommercial initiative created by Suzana Melo. Formal registration as a nonprofit association is planned as the project grows.
Suzana Melo, Founder#
Suzana Melo built her career twice.
The first time, as a journalist in Brazil, she spent over 20 years as an editor-in-chief and media director, leading newsrooms under daily deadlines. The second time, she moved to New Zealand with no English, worked as a cleaner, a supermarket checkout operator, and a driver, rebuilt her confidence and her language from scratch, and completed a coding bootcamp in her 40s with no technical background.
She’s now a full-stack engineer, an AWS Community Builder, and a postgraduate student in AI and Machine Learning at PUC Minas. She writes about Cloud, AWS, and AI for developers and career changers at suzanamelo.com. She founded and leads the AWS Women’s User Group Sweden, co-organizes AWS Community Day Baltic, and previously founded and led developer communities in New Zealand, including the Auckland AWS Tools and Programming and Full-Stack Engineering Auckland meetups.
She has spent years mentoring career changers, women, and tech beginners across Europe, West Asia, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas, through WIICA’s CloudHER program (1,000+ women trained across 10 African countries) and Escola da Nuvem in Brazil (3,600+ students placed into jobs), alongside the informal mentoring that comes with leading a community.
She knows what it means to have no one in your network who can answer the question you’re afraid to ask. The Mentor Gap is what closing that gap, for someone else, actually requires.
